7 Dangers of Traveling While Plus Size
A couple of weeks ago when I was in Kampot, Cambodia, I posted a rant on Instagram after a particularly aggressive Asian tourist followed me around with a camera when I told him no. It sparked some interesting conversations! I also had a few people admit to me that hearing about these experiences makes them fearful to travel and ask me if it’s worth it. Here is my response to that.
This is what you have to be scared of.
1. You lose parts of yourself…
Any preconceived ideas of what you can’t do because of your size will be left trailing in the dust.
2. Your confidence will be smashed to smithereens…
The fake kind that is, to be replaced by a real love and a deep appreciation for your body.
3. You’ll be wrong, a lot….
You’ll prove yourself, and others, wrong as you bust through fat myth after fat myth.
4. You will rock the boat….
You’ll have some of the most awesome conversations about body image and fat phobia, and make a huge difference for people on your way.
5. You will be selfish…
Suddenly you find yourself asking for what you need to exist comfortably. Single seat in the minivan, seat belt extender, a sturdier chair… one day you’ll wake up and realize you’ve stopped apologizing for the space you take up in the world.
6. You’ll cost people money…
If you share your experiences you may, gasp, encourage other fat ladies (and gents) to book that trip and get on a plane!
7. Worst of all… it’s addictive!
Once you start, you’ll never want to stop.
